Annie Bell and her siblings were raised by their widowed mother in Coffee County, Alabama which was home to hundreds of Lindsey relatives. The Lindsey’s were slaves in Coffee County, Alabama before emancipation. Her great grandfather, Nelson Lindsey, was a slave. After emancipation, the Lindsey’s were sharecroppers farming the land owned by descendants of their former slave masters.

Finding farm work in the cane fields around Lake Okeechobee, the family eventually settled in Belle Glade, Florida. In 1936 Annie Bell came to Stuart, Florida where other relatives had moved from Alabama. Stuart remained her home for the rest of her life.
