Norman was born in Jersey City, New Jersey to the late Timothy McGahee, Sr. and the late Nora Bell Anderson McGahee.

He graduated from South Fork High School in Martin County. He too was employed in funeral services and was about to continue his studies at Miami Dade when he died in an automobile accident in 1996.

At the time of his death he was also employed as a program director for the Hobe Sound, Florida Boys and Girls Club. He was married to Rhonda McGahee, and is the father to one son, Denzel Washington.

Norman was the brother and adopted son to Reverend and Mrs. John A. Thorne.
