Obituary for Velma Jean Hunter

July 9, 2010, at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, heaven rejoiced as Sister Velma Jean Hunter made her victorious entry into the portals of glory. She was born in Asbury Park, New Jersey to the parents of Henry Shaw and Carolyn Franks and moved to Palm Beach County as a toddler. She attended Ellen Davis Elementary School, Lincoln High School and graduated from Jupiter High School. Velma went on to further her education at Palm Beach Junior College. Velma was a longtime member of the Jupiter Church of God, where she has served as chuch clerk, Sunday school teacher, a member of the Mission Dept., Women's Ministries and the choir, Girl's Ministries Bluebell Counselor, caterer, wedding floral designer and Suncoast Band parent. She was a longtime employee at ITT in west Palm Beach, FL. Velma retired from South Bell Telephone company as a telephone operator and after that she was employed by Walmart. Velma Jean Hunter was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Shaw and Carolyn Hunter Williams and Dozier Hunter, Sr.; sisters, Deborah Hunter, Kaye Melissa Hunter, Janet and Joan Hunter; a brother, James Hunter; and a granddaughter, Alonzette Brinson. Surviving to cherish memories of love, fun and laughter as well as celebrate her homegoing are: her devoted and loving children, Willa Regina Bernard of Wellington, FL; Willie J. Mitchell, III (and his wife, Bethany) of Atlanta, GA; 4 caring sisters, Iris Etheredge (Edward) of West Palm Beach, FL, Christine Hodge of Jupiter, FL, Wilma Hunter of Atlanta, GA and Fay Hunter of West Palm Beach, FL; 2 caring brothers, Dozier Hunter of St. Paul, MN and Vincent Hunter of Sacramento, CA; 5 adorable grandchildren whom she dearly loved, Alexis Brinson, Quinn Mitchell, Aaliyah Brinson, Cameron Mitchell and Caden Mitchell; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, church family and friends. Services: Visitation will be held on Friday, July 16, 2010 from 4pm-7pm at the Jupiter Church of God. A Homegoing Celebration will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at 11:00am at the church with Evangelist Edna Mae Runner officiating and Bishop Michael E. Reid is pastor. Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Memorial Park in Jupiter, FL. Arrangements have been entrusted into the care of Thorne's Mortuary in Stuart, FL. Please sign the guest book.
