Obituary for Thelma Reed

Thelma Reed was born on February 21, 1938, in Blackville, South Carolina to the late James Reed and Louis Green Matheny. At a young age Thelma and her family moved to Stuart, Florida, where she attended Stuart Training School. During her high school years Thelma was a renowned basketball player. Shortly after high school Thelma relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she resided for 40 years. Growing tired of the busyness of living in the city, she returned to her quaint beloved hometown Stuart, Florida. Thelma was employed in trucking industry, and also Good Will Industries. Although, she was close to her family, Thelma led a very private life. She had a kind heart, and was very generous. She was a member of St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, in Stuart, Florida. Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, and step-father Leroy Matheny, Sr., brothers, Charles Reed, Sr., Athel Green, Sr., Clyde Reed, Sr. and Leroy Matheny, Jr.; and a sister Annie Ruth Matheny. On Saturday, April 30, 2016, before dawn Thelma left the cares of this world, and entered into eternal rest. She leaves to cherish her precious memories: Brothers: Isaac Matheny, and Chester Matheny, Sr. (Jennifer) of Stuart, FL; Robert Matheny, Sr. (Lisa), and Jerry Matheny (Brenda) of Port St. Lucie, FL ; sisters, Margie Harris, Lillie Moreland (Sam) and Delores Matheny of Stuart, FL; Aunts, Edna Mae Green, of Chicago, IL, and Delores Ford of Philadelphia, PA. ; Close Friends, Lula and Allen Thomas, Charlie Crist, Jr., and Casey Holyfield, Sr. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and sorrowing friends who will dearly miss her kindness and thoughtfulness. Services: Visitation will be held on Monday from 12:00noon until 2:00pm, Thorne's Mortuary Chapel in Stuart, FL. A celebration of life will begin 2:00pm at the chapel with the Reverend Melvin E. Hymes, Jr. officiating.
