Obituary for Simon L. Leggett

Mr. Simon L. Leggett, 88 a longtime resident of Stuart, FL, passed away at Martin Memorial Health Systems-South on April 20, 2017. He was born in Colquitt, GA to the parents of the late Johnnie and the late Annie Lee Adams Leggett on July 12, 1928. Mr. Leggett was educated in the public schools of Miller and Seminole Counties in Georgia. After graduating from high school, Simon married Lois Cumbie of Donaldsonville, GA. The couple moved to Martin County 61 years ago. They had nine children, with one preceding him in death. Simon was gainfully employed as a concrete finisher for the Dickerson Corporation before his health failed him. He was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Stuart and served as Trustee for many years prior to becoming Emeritus. He was also a member of the Evans Masonic Lodge No. 72 of Stuart. Simon was well known for his many skills as a fisherman in the Martin County area. He also enjoyed gardening and caring for his yard. Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, Dr. Gerald D. Leggett, his brothers, John A. Leggett and Harvey Richard Leggett. He leaves behind to cherish precious memories: a loving and devoted wife, Lois C. Leggett of Stuart, FL; 5 sons, Freddie Leggett and his wife Jessie of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Kenneth Leggett and his wife Alcene of Miami, FL, Milton Leggett of Vero Beach, FL, Reginald Leggett and Michael Leggett both of Stuart, FL; 3 daughters, Carol Leggett Worthy and her husband Earnest of Albany, GA, Janice Leggett Loud and her husband Irwin III of Chicago, IL, and Gail Leggett McVea and her husband Curtis of Dallas, TX; a sister, Geraldine Leggett of Bradenton, FL; 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives including, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will miss him dearly. Services: Visitation will be held on Friday, April 28, 2017 at St. Paul A.M.E. Church from 5pm-7pm and a celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017, 11am at the church with the pastor Reverend Melvin Hymnes officiating. Burial will follow at Fernhill Cemetery in Stuart, FL. Arrangements have been entrusted into the care of Thorne's Mortuary in Stuart, FL.
