Obituary for Richard "Victor" McHardy Jr.

Mr. Richard A. McHardy, Jr. died Friday November 21,2014 at Martin Memorial Health Systems-North in Stuart, FL. Mr.Victor as he was affectionately known to family and the community was born to the late, Richard A. McHardy, Sr. and Annie Lou Green-McHardy on October 3,1916 in Stuart, FL. Growing up in Stuart in the early 20th century wasn't easy. As a young man, Victor learned the importance of hard work and family from his father. He worked multiple jobs as a adolescent to support himself and his family. In those times it wasn't common for a young African-American to attend college, but Victor was able to attend FAMC (now known as FAMU) where he was majoring in History but at the sudden unfortunate death of his father, Victor had to return home during his second semester of his senior year to help his mother manage the family estate and other business matters in his father's stead. He worked as a runway attendant at Witham Field Airport,as a Bus Driver who transported Veterans from Stuart to West Palm Beach, and finally as a Pressman for the Stuart News where he served in management positions until his withdrawal from that operation, and the list goes on. Being the wise man that he was afforded him the opportunity to send all of his children to college to obtain graduate and post graduate degrees in multiple studies along with helping many others within the community he loved so dearly. Caring passionately about his community he also served as the longest serving volunteer of the American Red Cross with a tenure ranging over 75 years. Mr. Victor was a member of St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Stuart serving in several capacities within the church. He was the oldest and longest living member of the church. He will be sorely missed in the East Stuart Community as well as by his loving family. He leaves behind to forever cherish his life: his wife, Margaret Ferguson-McHardy; 2 sons, Alvin McHardy(Gloria) of Stuart, FL and Calvin A. Williams (Terrye) of Kalamazoo, Michigan; daughter, Winifred "Winnie" Walton-Johnson of Port Saint Lucie, FL; brother, Quilly McHardy (Arlene)of Port Salerno, FL 10 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren. Mr. Richard "Victor" McHardy,Jr. will lie in repose on Friday, November 28,2014 from 11AM to 1PM at St. Paul AME Church. A service of celebration and recognition will begin at 1PM at the aforementioned church. Burial will follow at Fernhill Memorial Gardens & Mausoleum, Stuart.
