Obituary for Leroy Washington Captain

Mr. Leroy Washington, 87, a prominent resident of Stuart, FL and former Deputy Chief of Police in Stuart, went home to be with the Lord at Martin Memorial Hospital North in Stuart. He was born to the parentage of the late George Washington, Sr. and the late Sallie Frierson-Washington in Port Salerno, FL. Captain Washington was educated in the public schools of Martin County and served in the United States Armed Forces. Captain Washington fought in the Korean War, he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant, and after service to his country, he received an honorable discharge. After that, he served for 6 years in the Army Reserve. Captain Leroy Washington joined the City of Stuart Police Department in 1956 as a part-time patrol officer. He advanced in rank from being one of the first African-American patrol officers hired in the department to sergeant, lieutenant, and then the first African-American Captain of the Stuart Police Department. He held the rank as captain and came under the order of Deputy Chief of Police dedicating 34 years of his life serving his community. He was a faithful member of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Stuart. He loved to sing, "Your Grace and Mercy, Brought Me Through". He was a member of Choir #1, a member of the Trustee Board and a Deacon (he was appointed Deacon Emeritus by Pastor Elker Harris). Along with his parents, Captain Washington was also preceded in death by a daughter, Evangelist Carol Washington; brothers, Frank, James, Ernest, Larry and George Washington, Jr. and a sister, Evangelist Johnnie Pearl Washington-Jackson. Survivors include: his loving wife of 65 years, Mantha Washington of Stuart, FL; granddaughters, Carmen Anderson of Port Salerno, FL and Carla Washington of Jensen Beach, FL; 3 great-grandchildren, Denzel Leroy Washington of Jensen Beach, FL, Bria Anderson of Port Salerno, FL and Kayah Delancy of Jensen Beach, FL; goddaughter, Alexia Ausby of Orlando, FL; and a host of other relatives including, nieces, nephews, cousins including Hazel Green (Frank-deceased), church family, neighbors and friends including James Davis, Sr.who will miss him dearly. Services: Visitation will be held on Friday, January 16, 2015 at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church from 5pm-7pm. A service of celebration will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2450 SE Ocean Blvd-Stuart, FL, 11:00am. Burial will follow at Fernhill Memorial Gardens. Arrangements have been entrusted into the care of Thorne's Mortuary in Stuart.
