Obituary for John Willie Gilbert Sr. Mr.

Mr. John Gilbert Sr., 94 a long time resident of Stuart, FL (Port Salerno Community), went home to be with the Lord in the arms of his devoted wife Rosena, in the comfort of his home. He was born in Augusta, Georgia to the parents of William Gilbert, Sr. and Rose Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert attended the public schools of Richmond County. He moved to Stuart in the early 1900's. He was the first African-American plumber in Martin County and was self-employed. Mr. Gilbert was a member of the Lake Street Church of Christ in Stuart for 54 years. He served in just about every category including, an Elder and Deacon. Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by: children, Yvonne Gilbert, Evelyn Gilbert-Terrell, and De-ette Gilbert-Carter; and siblings, Otis Gilbert, Johnny Frank Gilbert, Curley Gilbert, Foston Gilbert, Sr. and William Gilbert, Jr. His survivors include: a loving and devoted wife, Rosena Gilbert of Port Salerno, FL; 3 sons, John Willie Gilbert, Jr. of West Palm, Beach, FL, Jimmy Gilbert of Riviera Beach, FL and Greg Gilbert(Renee) of Port St. Lucie, FL; 2 daughters, Alma Spearman of Riviera Beach, FL and Sandra Lee Jones (Billie) of Indiantown, FL; a brother, Ralph Gilbert of Philadelphia, PA; 18 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, great-great-granchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family and friends. Services: Visitation will be held from 4pm-7pm at Thorne's Mortuary Chapel in Stuart, FL on Friday, May 25, 2012. A homegoing celebration will be held on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at the Lake Street Church of Christ in Stuart at 11:00am. Burial and Dove Release will follow at New Monrovia Cemetery in Port Salerno, FL. Arrangements have been entrusted into the care of Thorne's Mortuary in Stuart, FL. Please sign the guest registry.
