Obituary for Helen Poitier Munnings

Helen P. Munnings, 89 of Fort Lauderdale, FL, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 12, 2021 in Pompano, Florida at Trust Bridge Hospice.

She was born to the parents of the late Bishop and Mrs. Harcourt Garfield Poitier on May 28, 1932 in the city of Deerfield Beach, Florida. As a child, Helen was extremely gifted and while growing up, her talent for singing and public oratory marked her life.

While residing in Deerfield Beach, she attended Braithwaite Elementary and Junior High School and graduated from Carver High School in Delray Beach. She graduated first in her class at Tennessee State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. Upon graduation, Helen returned to Florida and began her teaching career in the western zone of Palm Beach Country.

Helen was united in marriage to Vernon Munnings in 1959. To this union three children were born, Dwayne, Brent and Faye.

She was a member of the Deerfield Beach Church of God (now Cathedral Church of God), and served faithfully in the church as choir member, Sunday School teacher, librarian, Ladies Ministries president, Young at Heart member, greeter, after-school tutor, and numerous other areas of ministry.

In addition to her service to God and His church, Helen was also active in community and civic organizations. Helen Poitier Munnings was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., the American Library Association, International Reading Association, Broward County Media Specialists, and the Retired Educators Association.

As health challenges occurred and she was unable to drive to her beloved church in Deerfield, her daughter, Faye made it possible for her to worship at Victory Christian Center where her brother, Bishop D.L. Poitier began to shepherd her.

She leaves to cherish her life, three children; Dwayne Munnings, Brent Munnings, and Faye Munnings, all of Fort Lauderdale; three grandchildren - Brent Philip, Maya and one great grandchild, Michael; siblings; and many extended family members, godchildren, and specials friends some of whom she led to the Lord!

Her body will lie repose, awaiting the resurrection at Memorial Cemetery in Deerfield Beach, Florida.

Professional arrangements have been entrusted into the care of Thorne's Mortuary, Inc. in Stuart, FL.
