Obituary for Benjamin Miller Sr.

Mr. Benjamin Miller, 77, a resident of Hobe Sound, FL died at Treasure Coast Hospices (Harper House)in Stuart, FL on February 22, 2009. He was born in Gomez, FL to the parents of the late Edward Miller and Ethel Mackey Miller. He was educated in the public school system of Martin County and graduated from Stuart Training School in the Class of 1950. Mr. Miller attended FAMU and majored in Physical Education. He was employed as a horticulturist on Jupiter Island. He was a member of New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Gomez and he also worshipped at New Allen Temple A.M.E. Church in Hobe Sound. Mr. Miller was a member of the American Legion and VFW Post #4194 in Stuart, FL. He was inducted into the United States Armed Forces on February 13, 1952 and received an honorable discharge as a Staff Sergeant on February 11, 1955. He earned the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by: 2 brothers, James and Floyd Miller. Survivors include: his wife, Sandra W. Miller of Hobe Sound, FL; 2 sons, Benjamin Miller, Jr. (Nadine) of Summerville, SC and Arnold Fields (Paula) of Bowie, MD; 2 stepsons, Eric Wade of West Palm Beach, FL and Darrell McCrae of Stuart, FL; 2 stepdaughters, Tracie Spikes (Eddie) of Stuart, FL and Cheryl Wade of West Palm Beach, FL; an only brother, Alfred Miller, Sr. (Hattie) of Riviera Beach, FL; 23 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters-in-law, Hazel Gray (Clarence) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Jerri Rolle (Ralph) and Marian Wade of West Palm Beach, FL; 2 brothers-in-law, Edwin L. Wade (Luvenia) of Riviera Beach, FL and Reginald Wade of High Point, NC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was a mentor and especially cared for Alan Grant, Jr., Kenneth Harris and Tim Pettway. Services: Visitation will be held on Friday, February 27, 2009 from 5pm-7pm at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Hobe Sound. A "Wake Service", will begin at 6pm. On Saturday, February 28, 2009, "A Homegoing Celebration", will begin 11:00am at New Allen A.M.E. Church in Hobe Sound with Reverend James Allen, officiating and Reverend Eugene Monroe, pastor/presiding. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Banner Lake Cemetery in Hobe Sound. Thorne's Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
